In Recognition of Extraordinary Courage, Service, and Sacrifice
There are stories the world would never have known had courageous journalists and photojournalists not chosen to walk toward danger while others fled from it.
Across battlefields, bombed cities, refugee camps, humanitarian crises, revolutions, and forgotten conflicts, war correspondents have served humanity by documenting truth under extraordinary circumstances. Armed not with weapons, but with cameras, notebooks, microphones, and unwavering integrity, they have preserved history, exposed atrocities, defended human dignity, and ensured that the suffering of civilians was never erased from the global conscience.
Many paid the ultimate price.
Others returned carrying invisible wounds—psychological trauma, permanent injuries, displacement, imprisonment, intimidation, and the lifelong burden of witnessing humanity at its darkest moments.
Yet they continued.
Their work has shaped international policy, exposed war crimes, mobilized humanitarian assistance, strengthened democratic accountability, challenged impunity, and inspired generations of journalists committed to ethical reporting and public service.
Today, the global media community stands upon the foundation they built.

A Tribute from Nairobi to the World
In October 2026, the international community will gather in Nairobi, Kenya, for a historic global assembly dedicated to the protection, advocacy, and professional resilience of journalists operating in high-risk environments.
The Global Press Peace Summit 2026 represents a defining moment for the international media community—a high-level convening established to confront one of the most urgent human rights and peacebuilding challenges of our time: the deliberate targeting of journalists, the erosion of media safety, and the increasing threats facing those who document conflict. The summit seeks to advance practical protection measures, strengthen international cooperation, and develop lasting policy solutions, including the adoption of the Nairobi Declaration on the Protection of Journalists in Conflict Zones.
As the world converges in Nairobi, this recognition publication serves not only as a tribute to those who came before us, but also as a solemn commitment to those who continue reporting from today's frontlines.
A Promise to Future Generations
We honour those who have fallen.
We celebrate those who continue to serve.
We stand beside those who remain on the frontlines.
Their courage has protected truth.
Their sacrifice has strengthened journalism.
Their resilience continues to inspire peace.
May their legacy guide future generations of journalists to report with courage, integrity, compassion, and unwavering commitment to humanity.
