SIX Themes

Structuring the Summit’s agenda

Physical & Digital Protection of Journalists
This theme focuses on improving the safety and survival of journalists working in high-risk and conflict environments. It covers hostile environment awareness, protective equipment (PPE), satellite communication systems, secure transportation, cyber safety, encrypted communication, surveillance protection, and newsroom security.
Legal Frameworks & Accountability
This area addresses the widespread impunity surrounding attacks on journalists, where 80–90% of cases remain unresolved globally.
Peace, Security & Mediation
Plenary session on Peace Security issues in support of Mediation and reflection through free Press in War and Conflicts around the world
Protection of Humanitarian Support Systems
Journalists and humanitarian workers often operate in the same dangerous spaces. This theme explores how to strengthen humanitarian corridors, protect medical and emergency responders, and preserve neutrality during conflict reporting. It includes collaboration with organizations like Red Cross, St. John Ambulance, and UN agencies to improve emergency response systems, evacuation mechanisms, and protection against “double-tap” attacks targeting both victims and responders.
Countering Misinformation, Propaganda, and Protecting Press Freedom
Conflicts often generate propaganda, disinformation, and suppression of independent reporting. This theme focuses on defending editorial independence, strengthening media regulation without censorship, improving fact-checking systems, and supporting ethical journalism.
Trauma Support, Rehabilitation & Livelihood Pathways
Beyond physical attacks, journalists often suffer long-term psychological trauma, displacement, and loss of livelihoods. This theme addresses mental health support, trauma counseling, emergency relocation, legal aid, professional rehabilitation, and income recovery for affected journalists and media workers.
